TAREA has been registered with the Tanzanian Ministry of Home Affairs in May of 2001. Since then, it has always pursued its objective of encouraging the use of renewable energy sources.

Tanzania Renewable Energy Association is a non-governmental organization (NGO). Furthermore, TAREA is non-profit making, attempting only to cover its running cost and any project expenditure.

In addition, TAREA is also a membership body. Any person interested in renewable energies, their possible uses, their application or research, or in fact any topic related to renewable energies, is liable to become a member and support TAREA's activities.

The association is led by the Executive Committee, which is elected by the Annual General Meeting. The daily activities are carried out by the Executive Secretary and the Administrative Secretary at TAREA Secretariat.
